The main steps of a risk assessment are:
  • 1. Identify the hazards arising from the work being undertaken.
  • 2. Decide who might be harmed by the identified hazards and how.
  • 3.Evaluate the risks arising from the hazards and decide on the control measures needed.
  • 4.Record the significant findings and implement changes.
  • 5.Regularly review your assessment and update it if necessary.

If five or more people are employed by your company, then the significant findings of the risk assessment must be recorded in writing. If there are fewer than five, then it’s not compulsory to keep a written record but it’s considered good practice and helps to ensure that the risks are controlled. b>

The assessment must be reviewed and updated every time there is a significant change to the work activity, workplace or the personnel involved. Additionally, if there is any other reason to suspect the current risk assessment is no longer valid, such as in the event of an accident, it must be reviewed.
