working at heights
The first step of the risk assessment process is to identify the hazards. For work at height, this relates to falls of people and materials from a height.

Techniques for identifying hazards include:

  • Assessing the layout of the work area. In particular, this involves identifying existing hazards, such as the presence of fragile roofing materials a worker could fall through or space limitations around machinery.
  • Asking employees for information on their work activities. For example, discussing the specifics of infrequent work activities that may involve work at height, such as machine or plant maintenance and cleaning.
  • Consulting manufacturers’ instructions or data sheets for work at height equipment.
  • Reviewing accident and ill health records.
