working at heights
Earlier in this course, we covered the hierarchy of control and explained how it details the order in which control methods should be chosen to eliminate or prevent a fall.

TSelecting control methods in line with the hierarchy of control is a legal requirement, therefore, it’s important to understand the hierarchy order. When selecting control methods, the following order should be used:

  • Avoid working at height where possible.
  • Make use of safe places to carry out work if possible.
  • Use collective work equipment to prevent falls.
  • Wear personal protective equipment to prevent falls.
  • Use collective equipment to reduce the distance and consequences of a fall.
  • Wear personal protective equipment to reduce the distance of a fall.
  • Ensure appropriate instruction and training on safe systems of work.

This section explains some of the practical ways to achieve these steps to ensure safe working practices when working at height. If you are not responsible for selecting the control measures for your organisation, being aware of them is still important as you will still be required to use them.
