working at heights
The WAH Regulations set out specific requirements for fragile materials. These are:
  • 1 No person must work on, from or near, or pass across or near, a fragile surface where it’s reasonably practicable to carry out the work safely without doing so. For example, make use of MEWPS or tower scaffolding to avoid working on fragile materials.
  • 2. Where it is not reasonably practicable to avoid work at or near fragile materials, then appropriate platforms, strong roof coverings, guardrails or similar means of support or protection must be provided and used.
  • 3 Where there is still a fall risk, despite the measures taken under points one and two, employers must take all reasonably practicable measures to minimise the distances and consequences of a fall. For example, safety nets can be used in addition to fall prevention methods to reduce the distance and consequences of a fall.

It’s important to follow the outlined steps above when working around fragile materials: avoid working on or around fragile materials, use fall prevention methods and take additional fall mitigation measures (nets, etc.) if a risk still remains.
