working at heights
MEWPS have several associated risks, therefore, before using MEWPS, it’s important to consider:
  • The height at which work will be taking place.
  • Which type of MEWP is appropriate to the work activity.
  • The ground conditions and assess the risk of the MEWP becoming unstable or overturning.
  • If there is appropriate clearance. For example, there needs to be adequate clearance between the top of the platform and any overhead obstructions.
  • If there are any other obstructions. For example, it’s important to consider any protruding features that might catch on the MEWP, such as steelwork, tree branches or power lines or if there is passing traffic that needs to be controlled.
  • What restraints are needed to prevent falls? For example, harnesses to prevent employees being thrown from equipment.
  • If the MEWP has been properly examined, inspected and maintained as required by the manufacturer’s instructions, and if the necessary daily checks have been carried out.
  • If all operators have appropriate formal training in the safe use of MEWPs.

When using MEWPS you must always have a rescue plan enforced. The plan must be practised and there must always be someone on the ground who knows the emergency rescue plan and can operate the machine’s ground controls.
