Mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPS) are electronic aerial devices that allow workers to safely access inaccessible areas, such as treetops.
The two most common types of MEWPS are:
- 1 Telescopic booms (or cherry pickers). Telescopic booms have the ability to be used in difficult or restricted access areas. When using larger machines, they can also reach substantial heights.
- 2 Scissor lifts. Scissor lifts allow a wide platform with increased load capacity. They allow for safe installation of electrical and mechanical installations.
MEWPS are another safer alternative to ladders, but they can still topple if used incorrectly. To ensure MEWPS are used safely, employers must:
- PA Properly plan all work involving a MEWP.
- A Ensure MEWPS are never overloaded.
- A Ensure anyone using or operating a MEWP is appropriately trained.
