working at heights
L Ladders and stepladders are commonly used for work at height activities. However, they are a less safe alternative to the other equipment outlined in this module and should only be used when the risk assessment shows the use of other, safer work equipment is not reasonably practicable.

In general, you should only use a ladder or stepladder for work that is low risk and short duration (up to 30 minutes). To decide if your work activities are low risk, you must:

  • Consider the height required to carry out the work activity.
  • Ensure you can keep three contact points on the ladder or step ladder at all times.
  • Make sure the work is accessible and will not require you to overreach.
  • Only need the ladder to carry out ‘light duties’. You should only carry light tools and materials on a ladder and must never overload it.
  • Ensure the ladder or stepladder is stable and properly secured before use.
  • Check the ladder is in good working order before use.

It’s also important to consider the environment in which you will be carrying out the work at height. For example, are there any overhead power lines which may pose a risk?
