Falls from vehicles account for a large number of work at height accidents. A significant portion of these occur when loading and unloading a vehicle. Therefore, when working on vehicles, it’s essential to take precautions to prevent or minimise the risk.
When assessing and planning work at height activities involving vehicles, it’s vital to use the following control measures:
- Plan to avoid work at height wherever possible, such as positioning plant controls at ground level to avoid the need to climb.
- Where work at height cannot be avoided, select work equipment to prevent falls.
- Give priority to equipment that protects everyone at risk, such as providing vehicle platforms with handrails.
- Where the risk of a fall cannot be prevented, use equipment to minimise the distance and consequences of a fall, such as airbags placed around the trailer or vehicle bed.
- Where this is not reasonably practicable, use equipment that protects the individual, such as lanyards or harnesses.
